Music is an important and uplifting part of the funeral service. Today’s more casual environment, together with the particular circumstances surrounding a death, means that almost any music is appropriate. Bagpipes or a clarinet solo can be particularly moving.

Here is a selection of music and hymns that have been incorporated into funerals I have recently officiated at:

  • "Time to Say Goodbye" – Sarah Brightman
  • "My Way" – Frank Sinatra
  • "My Heart Will Go On" – Celine Dion
  • "We’ll Meet Again" – Vera Lyn
  • "Unforgettable" – Nat King Cole
  • "Wind Beneath My Wings" – Bette Midler
  • "Memories" – Barbara Streisand
  • "I Am Sailing" – Rod Stewart
  • "Candle in the Wind" – Elton John
  • "Tears in Heaven" – Eric Clapton
  • "How Great Thou Art": - Howard Morrison

  • Pachelbel’s "Canon in D" as well as several of the immortal classics

  • The Lord’s My Shepherd
  • Amazing Grace
  • Abide With Me
  • All Things Bright & Beautiful
  • The Old Rugged Cross
  • Morning Has Broken
  • Jerusalem – "And did those Feet in Ancient Time"
  • I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing
  • Praise My Soul the King of Heaven
  • Rock of Ages Cleft for Me
  • Now is the Hour
