Civil Unions
Since 26 April 2005 it is possible to formalise a relationship between two people in accordance with the provisions of the New Zealand Civil Union Act 2004. The couple may be of the same sex or of different sexes with the ceremony occurring either in a Registry Office, or be conducted by an approved Civil Union Celebrant at a place determined by the couple at any time, on any day of the week.
Couples planning a Civil Union are required to complete the appropriate “Notice of Intended Civil Union” form, which includes a statutory declaration that both parties are free to be joined in a civil union and that all the details supplied on the form are true and correct.
These forms are obtained from a Registry Office – phone 0800 22 52 52 –
or they can be downloaded from – www.bdm.govt.nz – a fee will apply.
The Births, Deaths and Marriages web site also gives details for couples who reside overseas as well as the procedure for those who are already married and want to change to a civil union …… or change their civil union to a marriage. Information is also available on lodging formal reasons why a Civil Union Licence should not be issued.
A civil union ceremony may be similar to a wedding ceremony or a partner commitment ceremony. It may be formal or quite informal depending on the location, number of guests and the needs of the couple. The ceremony can take place in a home, garden or any other venue chosen by the couple as appropriate for their milestone occasion. The vows, or declarations that each party to the union makes, can be crafted to reflect the values and aspirations of the couple.
